Dog Names

Giving your dog the proper name is very important, more important than most people realize. A dog's name can dictate it's personality and intellegance. This idea may be far fetched to some people (no pun intended) but from a psychological stand point you can understand that a dog name can impact a dog's ability to learn. As brilliant as our four legged friends may seem at times they are still an animal of instinct and obey a strict social ladder of dominance. Even as a pack of wild dogs each dog has it's own unique dog name. These are not the names that you or I give our dogs but rather dog names that are given to them by alpha dogs of thier pack. Dogs speak to eachother with body language and variations of vocalization. You must keep these ideas in mind when you too are acting as the dominant figure of your pack.

  • Dog names should be simple and consist of two sylables or less. Keeping your dog's name short and too the point will drastically increase your dogs ability to learn.
  • Dog names should be of a nuetral tone. This tends to be a bit more difficult rule to follow. We know that a majority of the time we love and cherish our dogs, but on those few occassions where your pet needs to be repremanded a sweet, high tone last sylable name could further confuse your pet. But this can overcome by making your full command stern and direct.
  • Dog names should fit your dogs personality or the personality which you wish your dog to have. A dog name like "Butch" which has a direct overtone as opposed to a name like "Pete" which is more high pitched.
  • Based upon the previous concept of overtones you will see that a majority of Male Dog Names are single sylable and tend to be direct, while Female Dog Names tend to be two sylable and end with a high pitch.

These are all generalizations for giving your dog the proper name. There is always a biological side of your dog that will always override any nuturing and dog naming idea listed above. A list is provided below for the top 20 Dog Names that owners have named their female or male dogs.
